Flood lights launch at BMX track

There were heated scenes this week in the council chamber at the monthly meeting of Mayo County Council. Independent Cathaoirleach Councillor Michael Burke was forced to call time on Independent councillor Frank Durcan a number of times after Cllr Durcan refused to stop speaking despite repeatedly being told by the Cathaoirleach he had gone over his allotted time.

The Order of Malta was founded in the 12th century in Jerusalem to care for Christian pilgrims in the Holy Land and along pilgrimage routes through Christian Europe. Subsequently they were known as the Knights Hospitallers and when they came to Ireland they maintained hospitals for the sick, the poor, and the needy, and hostels for the use of travellers. The order is involved in many charitable activities, the most important being the administration of the Order of Malta Ambulance Corps.

Outpouring of sympathy following death of legendary actor Mick Lally

There was widespread outpourings of sympathy this week following the death on Tuesday of Tourmakeady native Mick Lally. Lally, who was 64, died in hospital in Dublin on Tuesday following a short illness. His funeral service took place in Newlands Cross crematorium chapel at 2pm yesterday, Thursday. He is survived by his wife Peggy and three children, Saileog, Darach, and Maghnus.

Airlines are out of step with musicians - Higgins

Jim Higgins, Fine Gael MEP for the North West, has condemned the European-wide lack of regulations regarding the transportation of musical instruments and the abuse of airlines’ position of power on the transport of the instruments. "Recent rules from airlines regarding hand luggage have been imposed with mixed intentions of greater efficiency on flights but also the emphasis is on financial gain to the airlines concerned. However, gross abuse of the position they hold in relation to carry-on baggage can not be tolerated," Mr Higgins stated.
